Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed his anger at the team’s player, Xavi, and his agent, for not resolving the renewal file until this moment.
Xavi’s contract with Barcelona, 17, expires at the end of next season, and no agreement has been reached on the renewal yet.
Laporta said, in comments highlighted by the Spanish newspaper, Mundo Deportivo: “Xavi’s agent has had a renewal offer on the table for a long time, and the news we have is that he is comparing our offer with several other offers, and at some point, he will have to make a decision.”
He added: “We have already made our position clear, and till the moment, it has not been accepted by the player’s agent.”
When asked if he might feel angry about this situation, he said: “Yes, he is a player we all love, he is 17 years old, and he has a wonderful present and future in Barcelona, and we do not understand the reason for this situation.”
He continued: “His agent plays and compares. I think that the club’s offer of our salary levels is more than acceptable. In addition, we will not depart from the specified ceiling, because I do not want Barcelona to continue the line followed by our predecessors, who led Barcelona to ruin.”
And he continued: “We must set a standard, and this is what we do. If we have elements from the academy, we will give them good offers in the present and the future, but it turns out that their agents compare offers and postpone the decision, and this is a situation I do not like.”
“I encourage Xavi to accept the offer as soon as possible, as it also helps us plan,” he confirmed.
Laporta criticized the end of the Barcelona season, saying: “The season ended in frustration, although I realize that we suffered injuries, it is unacceptable to lose against Cadiz, Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal at home. I am disappointed in the team’s position.”
